Who is dominating Ethanol production globally?


An exclusive researched row graph represented in a rich visual infographic showing the latest data of ethanol production by country from highest to lowest. Each country is presented with their percentage, name and country flag. Listed countries include USA, China, India, Brazil, EU and others.

More than half of the world’s ethanol is produced by USA, followed by Brazil at 27% and India at 8%.


In fact, just these 3 countries cumulatively produce 87% of the world’s ethanol. Unbelievable!


Majority of the world’s ethanol is used in the transportation sector, to blend with gasoline to create E10/ E15. E10 means the fuel is 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline. E15 is 15% ethanol and so on.


Here’s the story behind numbers:


  1. USA: 52%

    World’s largest producer from corn (15 BG), mixed into almost all of America’s gas stations as E10/ E15 in gasoline.


  1. Brazil: 27%

    Second largest producer (5-8 BG from sugarcane). Brazil runs E27 mandatory blend and pure E100 for flex fuel cars.


  1. India: 8%

    Ethanol production is rapidly scaling from sugarcane and grains, with government has achieved E20 target across the country.


  1. EU: 5%

    Majorly produced from wheat and sugar beet. Used primarily as E5-E10 blends as under the Renewable Energy Directive.


  1. China: 3%

    Produces 1BG from corn and cassava and piloting E10 nationwide rollout.


Essentially, higher the number, the more ethanol used and less gasoline, leading to lower emissions but also lower fuel efficiency.
